Why do cats do that?
Four habits every cat owner wonders about. Here is what veterinary and science sources agree on, and where they honestly say nobody knows yet.

Cat decoder
| Kneading | A kitten habit from nursing; usually a relaxed cat. It may also leave scent from the paws. |
|---|---|
| Purring | Often contentment, but cats also purr when hurt or in pain. |
| Biting while petted | Watch for a twitching tail or ears turning back, and stop petting before the bite. |
| Biting in play | Common in kittens and young cats; play with a toy, not your hand. |
| Meowing at you | Adult cats meow mostly at people: hello, or a request. |
| New or much more than before | Pain or illness can be the cause: see your vet. |
Reading the signs
Most of these habits are normal and harmless. What matters is change: a cat that starts biting when it never did, or meows all night when it used to sleep, may be telling you something hurts. A checkup rules that out before you work on the habit itself.
Living with it
- Kneading with claws out: a folded blanket on your lap saves your legs.
- Biting in play: use a wand or a kick toy so hands never become prey.
- Petting: short sessions, and stop at the first tail flick.
Good to know
- Kittens knead their mother's belly while nursing to get the milk flowing; an adult cat that kneads is usually relaxed.1,2,3
- Cats have scent glands in their paws, so kneading may also leave their scent; this is a theory, not a proven reason.1,2,3
- A cat purrs while breathing in and while breathing out; the sound comes from the voice box, and exactly how is still being studied.4,5,6
- No one knows for sure why cats purr: it often goes with contentment, but cats also purr when hurt or in pain.4,5
- Rough play with biting is common in kittens and young cats, and they are thought to learn gentler bites from their littermates.7,8
- Some cats suddenly bite while being petted, for reasons not fully understood; a twitching tail and ears turning back often come first.7,8,9
- Pain or illness can make a cat bite more or meow far more than usual, so a new or sudden change calls for a vet visit.7,8,9,10,11
- Kittens meow to their mother, but adult cats rarely meow at other cats: they meow mostly at people, to greet them or ask for things.10,11
